When choosing E-commerce, two platforms have been long-term contenders in this domain, Magento and Shopify. Magento has been the biggest player for complex and larger e-commerce applications while Shopify has gained popularity for “all in one” platform as it handles hosting, web design, payment gateways, and shipping too. These platforms are apparently quite similar yet different in multiple ways.

In this article, we have jotted down the fundamental differences between these platforms, by analyzing which you would be able to figure out which one suits your business requirements best.

Magento vs Shopify: Both are two widely acclaimed and adopted e-commerce portals which are having huge differences that you should know before giving a comparative evaluation of the two.

Features Comparison:

  • Basic Functionality:

Magento and Shopify both offer basic store features that are powerful enough for maintaining your application on an ongoing basis. Magento has quite advanced features built up in the system however, Shopify is more easy to install. The other features like shopping cart, checkout, collections, products are in both Magento and Shopify. In Shopify, you will be needing an app for extended functionality.

  • Managing Inventory:

Both Magento and Shopify allows for adding an unlimited number of products in their inventory. It is really easy to add and configure the products but in this part, Shopify is leading due to two reasons. Shopify provides direct integration to dropshipping inventory apps such as Oberlo while Magento doesn’t.

Also, you can virtually add an unlimited number of products on the Magento Community version, however, as you will increase the number of products it will directly impact the speed and performance. Therefore, for bulk number of products you need to switch to Magento Enterprise version. But this doesn’t happen in the case of Shopify as it is a fully managed and hosted platform.

  • Shipping Integration:

Magento and Shopify both provide flexible options for shipping integration. Shipping is the most important in business, especially for physical goods. Shopify has integration with dropshipping tools and also provides more accurate estimates of the costs of shipping. However, Magento has multiple shipping options by default, hence makes easy for developer to integrate them.

  • Coupons and Discount Functionality:

In this feature, both platforms differ in some aspects. While Magento provides coupons and discount features right from the start, Shopify doesn’t provide any offer feature on its Lite plan but have features on the other plan.

  • Payment Gateways:

Coming to Payment Gateways, Magento is leading here with 9 payment methods support by default. However, in Shopify you need to integrate from the 3rd Party apps. Also in Shopify, it charges no transaction fees for its own payment gateway transaction, but charges for other 3rd party payments.

  • Designs and Themes:

Magento and Shopify both offer a wide collection of themes and designs for a better look of your E-commerce store. However, if you looking for a wide range then Magento is a start here, while the number of themes and templates on Shopify are quite less.

  • Extensions, Plugins or Add-ons:

Extensions and Plugins can help in extending the functionality of your E-commerce in multiple ways. More than 100 apps and add-ons are available for Shopify with features like loyalty programs, e-mail marketing and accounting. But Magento is a star here, a whopping 5000+ extensions or add-ons.

  • Multi-language Feature:

While Magento provides default multi-language functionality, in Shopify you will be required 3rd Party integrations for implementing the multi-language feature on your E-commerce store.

Ease of Use:

As mentioned above, both Magento and Shopify are powerful e-commerce platforms and have a well-designed UI making very easy for a user to go through a smooth online purchase journey.

But still, Magento is not a self-hosted solution, while Shopify is. Hence, implementing a server for the hosting and setting up the store can become typical.

Also, Shopify has a wizard using which even novice users can easily set it up while Magento lacks this feature.

Costings:

Setup Fees:

There is no cost for setup Magento Community version as it is an open-source CMS, and Shopify is also free for the first 14 days trial. After 14 days, there are 4 trial packs for the Shopify:

  • Shopify Lite Plan: 9$
  • Basic Shopify Plan:29$
  • Shopify Plan: 79$
  • Advanced Shopify Plan: 299$

However, Magento Enterprise edition is not free. Also, in Magento, you have to pay for the hosting charger which can range from 5$ to 100s of dollars per month.

There are certain prices which vary as per the requirements for both platforms such as bandwidth requirements, themes, transaction fees and others.

Conclusion:

It is difficult to determine which platform would be best suitable for you. What matters is your requirement, budget, goals, to find which platform would be appropriate.

If you require a store for nearly 100 products then Shopify should be the first choice but you require a platform with unlimited features, scalability, and customization, Magento would be the best.
